This Month’s Theme: Do You Have Yogurt or Milk Every Day?

Yogurt, milk, cheese. Many people keep these in their daily routine simply because they believe they are good for the body.

But what if that very habit is one reason you sometimes feel heavy, tired, or sluggish? Before assuming a food is good for you, it is worth asking whether your own body can actually process it.

Do You Know About Lactose Intolerance?

Lactose intolerance is a condition where your body produces low levels of lactase, or the enzyme works less effectively. Lactase is what breaks down lactose, the natural sugar found in dairy products.

As we get older, some people naturally produce less lactase. It has also been reported that many East Asians tend to have more difficulty digesting lactose. Individual differences always apply.

What Happens Inside Your Body

When you consume milk, yogurt or cheese, your small intestine normally uses lactase to break lactose down into glucose and galactose. When lactase is low, that breakdown cannot complete, and the undigested lactose travels on to the colon.

There, gut bacteria begin to ferment it. Gas such as hydrogen, methane and carbon dioxide may be produced, and water may be drawn into the intestines. As a result, some people experience the following.

  • Stomach rumbling and bloating
  • More gas than usual
  • Loose stools or diarrhea-like symptoms
  • A general feeling of heaviness or sluggishness
  • Skin concerns such as acne or facial redness

Even “Healthy” Foods Need to Reach Your Cells

Nutrition follows a chain: you eat, you digest, you absorb, your blood carries it, and finally your cells use it. A food only helps you if it makes it all the way to the end of that chain.

If your circulation is poor, even good nutrients may not reach where your body needs them. This is why, at KAMI, we treat circulation as the foundation of everything else.

Simple Choices You Can Make

Instead of giving things up, try replacing them with something that suits your body better.

  • If you drink a latte every day: milk to plant-based milk such as soy, almond or oat
  • If you eat yogurt every day: dairy to fermented foods such as natto, kimchi, miso soup or enzyme drinks

You do not need to restrict yourself. The goal is to build the ability to choose what genuinely suits your body, and to take a closer look at the foods you may be eating without thinking.
